here are three types of water feature that you must be aware of when shopping for water features: fountains, ponds, and waterfalls. Fountains are self-containing with a below grade basin that stores water. Ponds are excavations with geotextiles and HDPE plastic liners with a pump and biofalls to promote water circulation. Lastly, a waterfall as its name describes it is an artificially made to mimic a natural cascade that can either be incorporate into a pond or have a pondless reservoir underneath with a pump to recirculate water. In terms of customers involvement fountains are the easiest to maintain and most time do not require professional maintenance, followed by waterfall that may need some professional maintenance, and finally pond which most likely would require some professional maintenance at some point. If you are just getting into water features we recommend you to start with a simple fountain and work yourself up to a pond.
The estimates cost for a fountain installation ranges between $350+tax up to $6'000+tax depending on the size. The estimate cost for installing a pondless waterfall ranges between $5'000+tax and $10'000+tax. The estimated cost for a pond installation ranges between $5'000+tax and $50'000+tax depending on the size of the pond and additional features.

Ponds on the other hand are a bigger investment as you are dealing with standing water. It is like having a small swimming pool in your backyard, specially if you have koi or goldfish in it. The annual maintenance for ponds could vary between $1'500+tax and $6'000+tax. Certainly you can cut on the expenses if you do it on your own, and just like Japanese gardens, many owners find it a therapy.
There are other smaller water features that can be use in apartments for as low as $300+tax.
